Photo: father shoots 7-yr-old daughter then shot himself dead

Pictured above is 7-year-old primary school pupil Mary Ann Shipstone who was shot twice  in the head by her father before he turned the gun on himself. Mary had just arrived home from school when her father arrived in a car, armed with a shotgun. She is now fighting for life in hospital while he was pronouncd dead in the scene.

The man believed to be her father shot himself dead in his car outside the home Mary shared with her mother, his former partner, Lyndsey Shipstone, in the quiet village of Northiam, East Sussex.

The incident, which Sussex Police have described as 'domestic', happened at 4pm yesterday as the girl described by neighbours as 'lovely and well-mannered' came home from school with her mother.

Neighours say the man suspected of shooting his daughter was 'not supposed to know where she and her mother lived' as he and Ms Shipstone were involved in a custody dispute. But one neighbour who heard the gunshots yesterday afternoon said she had seen the gunman's silver Toyota Rav 4 driving around the village - home to Mary and her mother since last April - for the past week.

Mary, a pupil at Beckley Church of England Primary School, was today said to be 'gravely, gravely ill' in Kings College Hospital, London, her mother at her bedside, as police warned: 'We probably need to prepare ourselves for bad news.'
